Delbert McFarlan, 72, Harrison

Posted

Delbert McFarlan, age 72 of Harrison, passed away Saturday, March 19 (2011) at his home.

The son of Andrew and Eva (Hembrey) McFarlan was born Dec. 11, 1938, at Valley Springs. Delbert worked for the city of Harrison, first for the water department and later with the street department where he became street superintendent. In 1991, Delbert bought farmland and realized his dream of becoming a chicken farmer.

Delbert enjoyed all things outdoors, whether it be the roar of his John Deere tractor, the churning of his garden tiller, the sound of beagles hot on the trail of a rabbit in the bottoms of the Buffalo River, the quiet footsteps of a whitetail buck approaching his tree stand somewhere in the Ozark National Forest, or the thundering gobble of a turkey strutting toward his call in a green grassy pasture.

A man of few words, Delbert let his actions speak for him in the way he loved his family, and his devotion to any task that needed finished, and the rock solid belief he had in himself and his decision making.

Delbert was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Walter, Melvin, Willard, Bill and Albert McFarlan.

His loving and devoted wife of 52 years, Betty Lee (Harrell) McFarlan of the home survives him. Other survivors are sons, Steven Dale McFarlan and wife Melinda Darnell McFarlan of Harrison and Kevin Lee McFarlan of Harrison; grandchildren, Thomas Steven McFarlan, Mariah Elaine McFarlan and Stephanie Jade McFarlan; sisters, Dorothy Coley of Gassville, Lorene Watts of Marshall, Juanita Yancey of Harrison and Norma Jean Preston of Cookeville, Tenn.; brother, Charles McFarlan; along with many other family and friends.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, at Coffman Funeral Home, Harrison, with the Rev. Kenneth Crow officiating. Burial will follow at Western Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, at the funeral home.
