John William Heard, 74, of Cotter, passed away Thursday, Nov. 8 (2018) in Little Rock.

He was born May 25, 1944, in Everton,to the late Cecil and Madge (Young) Heard. As a young man, John worked for Pepsi Cola for about 15 years, delivering Pepsi all over to many. He and his wife, Jeanette, owned and operated the White Sands Restaurant and Brass Door Restaurant and Motel for many years. He has cooked a countless number of breakfasts for so many wonderful people. John really enjoyed having coffee and laughs with the “regulars” every morning.

John was a loving dad, papaw and friend who loved the outdoors. He loved looking at God’s canvas in the sky during the day and the star-filled sky at night. He loved to deer hunt and go fishing. Many people knew him for “John’s Garden” in Cotter. He had the prettiest garden in the county. He loved taking care of his garden and visiting with everyone around when they came to buy his beautiful vegetables. He was a friend to all and a stranger to none.

Last, but most important, John was a man who believed in and greatly loved the Lord Jesus. The love that Jesus filled him with overflowed to everyone he met. When you were around him for any length of time, he made you smile and you felt that beautiful God-given love from his heart directly pouring out into yours. John dearly loved his church family at Gassville Baptist Church.

John was preceded in passing by his parents; his cherished wife of 45 years, Jeanette; one brother, Don Heard; and one sister, Carolyn Carpenter.

John is survived by four daughters and three sons-in-law, Lisa (Bill) Smith, of Springfield, Missouri, LaDonna (Tom) Appelbaum, of Saint Louis, Missouri, Cindy Smith, of Cotter, and Kenderia (Chris) Perry; of Bryant; one son and daughter-in-law, Darin (Sheri) Smith, of Gepp; eight grandchildren, Bailey Smith, Devin, Calvin and Carlin Henry, Cassidy, Christian and Kennedy Perry and Wesley Smith; two great-grandchildren, Tayshaun and Ayleigh Henry; two sisters, Joyce Smith, of Fort Smith, and Anna Mae Saylors and husband Howard Gene, of Lead Hill; one brother, Jerry (Red) Heard, of Harrison; a sister-in-law, LaRue Heard; a brother-in-law, Ronnie Carpenter; and a mother-in-law, Evelyn Ray, of Cotter.

A visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Conner Family Funeral Home Chapel in Mountain Home.
