This map shows the location of elk and white-tailed deer taken to sample for chronic wasting disease in Newton and Boone counties during a special hunt earlier this month. Test results hadn’t been received for most of the animals as of Tuesday.

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission recently released a map showing the location of where elk and white-tailed deer were taken for sampling for chronic wasting disease.

As the map shows, most of the positive results came from Newton County, both inside and outside the original focal zone for testing. Officials are still waiting for results from more animals than for which results have been received.

But three deer were also taken in Boone County. One was at Hilltop and another in the Gaither area. They both tested positive, but results hadn’t been received for a third taken north of Hilltop.

Some deer were shot, but some were either road kill or otherwise found dead.

AGFC officials say it usually takes a week to 10 days for test results to be returned.
