Newton County Sheriff Glenn Wheeler said a 20-year-old South Dakota woman was killed Saturday in an apparent fall from Hawksbill Crag, or Whittaker Point, near the Boxley Valley.

NEWTON COUNTY -- Authorities say 19-year-old Jessamy Samuels of Rogers fell to her death Sunday morning near Hawksbill Crag.

Newton County Deputy Glenn Wheeler, who is also with Tri-County Search and Rescue, said Samuels was hiking with a friend near the crag when she slipped on a rock and fell about 100 feet.

Wheeler said she was pronounced dead at the scene, although the original call reported her as being responsive.

"That's not uncommon in cases like this," Wheeler said, explaining that emergency calls are often confusing as responders are en route.

Wheeler said personnel from the Newton County Sheriff's Office, Newton County Search and Rescue, Buffalo River Search and Rescue, U.S. Forest Service, Mennonite Disaster Services, Tri-County Search and Rescue, North Arkansas Regional Medical Center, Harrison Fire Department and the National Park Service responded to the incident, although bystanders at the scene also provided assistance.

This happens too frequently, this area should be roped off or somehow made unavailable to hikers.

No it shouldn't... It doesn't happen that often. Way more likely to be killed in a car wreck than falling on this trail.
