Velma Lee Harris

Service: 10 a.m. Saturday, July 6, at Bellefonte Church of Christ, with interment at Maplewood Cemetery; Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Friday, July 5, at Roller-Christeson Funeral Home.

Velma Lee Harris, of Harrison, passed away Sunday, June 30 (2019) at the age of 93, surrounded by her family.  

She was born May 2, 1926, in Newton County, the daughter of Davie Vinson and Elsie May (McCutcheon) Reddell. Velma proudly lived her entire life in Newton and Boone counties.  

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her grandson, Matthew Gillum; her brother, Floy Reddell; and her sister, Ava Hickman.

Velma married Levy Harris on Dec. 19, 1947, and they were happily married for almost 68 years until his death on March 27, 2015. She was a strong, proud, resourceful woman who valued God and family above all else. She was a long-time member of Bellefonte Church of Christ. She enthusiastically took on all aspects of being a farm wife, whether it was in the house, garden, fields, or working with livestock. Acquaintances have described her as both the prettiest and the hardest-working woman they had ever seen.  

She will be deeply missed.

Velma is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Johnny Gillum, of Tennessee; her son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Junie Harris, of Little Rock; her grandchildren and their spouses, Doug and Stacy Gillum, Valeria Gillum, and Scott and Carol Gillum; and her great-grandchildren, Taylor Gillum, Jordan Gillum, Madison Gillum, Levy Gillum and Cooper Gillum.

Velma is also survived by her sisters, Ruth Pratt and Eoudella Young; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.  

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 5, at Roller-Christeson Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 6, at Bellefonte Church of Christ, with family and friends officiating.

Interment is in Maplewood Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Donald Joe Hickman, Brian Hickman, Alan Hickman, Mike Reddell, David Young and Billy Joe Roberts.
