FARMINGTON — The opportunity to advance to the state tournament was on the line Thursday in the 4A North Region Baseball Tournament at Farmington High School.
Harrison was paired against the No. 3 seed Clarksville from 4A-4. The Goblins took an early lead and rode it to the end with a 5-1 win over the Panthers.
Tanner Taylor was the leadoff batter for the Goblins and reached first with a base on balls. Taylor stole second before teammate Dylan Block was walked. Cole Keylon stepped up to the plate and sent the first pitch into right center field for a triple that brought in Taylor and Block to put Harrison ahead, 2-0.
With one out and facing a one-one count, sophomore Breckin Duck sent a two-run blast over the left field wall to give the Goblins a 4-0 advantage over Clarksville.
Both teams left a runner stranded in a scoreless second inning.
Duck’s successful performance with the bat carried over onto the mound. He struck out the first two Panther batters in the third and forced a pop fly to right field to end the top of the third inning.
Block began the bottom of the third by reaching on a fielding error and then stole second base. With one out, Journagan laid down a successful bunt that advanced Block to third. Duck’s second plate appearance resulted in his third RBI when he hit a fly ball to right field that sent Block across home plate to give Harrison a 5-0 lead.
It was three up and three down for both teams in the fourth inning.
Clarksville scored a run in the fifth after taking advantage of a pair of walks followed by a fly ball to the outfield that sent a runner home to get the Panthers within, 5-1.
Taylor was able to reach base in the bottom of the fifth with a single. He later stole second but was left stranded after a pair of pop flys and a line drive that resulted in the third out.
After allowing back-to-back singles to begin the top of the sixth inning, Duck struck out three-straight batters to end his day on the mound.
Colton Shaver closed the game on the mound by forcing a ground ball out and struck out the final two batters to give Harrison a 5-1 win.
Duck ended the day with three RBI and a home run. Keylon’s triple earned two RBI. Taylor and Journagan finished with one hit apiece.
Taylor stole two bases while teammates Block, Journagan and Tyler Hutchinson added one each.
Duck pitched 6.0 innings allowing one run on four hits and struck out six batters. Shaver added 1.0 innings on the mound with no hits and two strikeouts.
Harrison played Pottsville on Friday in the semifinals of the regional tournament. If Harrison wins, they will face the winner of Shiloh Christian and Morrilton on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in the championship game. A loss would put them in the third-place game against the loser of Shiloh Christian and Morrilton on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
