As we celebrate our nation’s independence this weekend, a 56-year-old song keeps bouncing around in my head. Kris Kristofferson penned this iconic tune in 1969; the year I arrived in Vietnam. It’s a song about love and loss, but it seems to have a much deeper meaning. Kristofferson said the song was inspired by the Fellini film, “La Strata” which ends with which a soldier, in the midst of war, looking up at the stars and weeping.
