When the battlefield fell silent and victory was theirs, Marines were faced with the grim task of burying their dead in the blood-soaked, volcanic ash. The 36-day battle was the bloodiest in Marine Corps history with one of every three men who stormed the beaches of Iwo Jima either wounded or killed in action. In all, Marines and Navy medical personnel sustained over 24,000 causalities including 6,140 dead.
