Boone County Master Gardeners April meeting notes

Posted
The April meeting of the Boone County Master Gardeners was held at the Fellowship Bible Church, 408 N. Ozark Street in their large meeting room in order to abide by the restrictions for COVID-19. President Olena introduced Cori Hopingardner, our program presenter. Prior to joining the Boone County Master Gardeners, she had been a long time Master Gardener in Colorado. Cori’s program was on the Kratky Method of hydroponics, which was introduced by Professor Kratky of the University of Hawaii several years ago. This method of hydroponics is a passive method, utilizing a one time setup, using no soil, only a nutrient solution and plants. Cori brought a sample of her system, and the heavy growth of the root systems of the plants showed how well it works. She explained the whole system, types of materials, nutrients, requirements, etc. She then took questions and gave more detailed information to those interested. Lavonne McCullough and Carol Freeman updated the group on the baskets. They are to order plants this week and will plant them and place the baskets on Carol’s trailer for storage. Carol will maintain them until such time as they are hung. A basket pole needs to be moved from in front of Back Street Trader, since the pole’s location impedes loading and unloading at that location. It was suggested and approved that it be relocated down the street in front of the Bakery across from the library. We will be having a ”Tour of the Gardens” for the public on Saturday, June 12. All are invited to visit the flower beds on the courthouse square and the pollinator garden. Master Gardeners who work on the specific beds will be present to explain the type of garden, specific plants, maintenance, etc. to the public. At the same time, the public will be able to purchase plants at the various gardens, and also to vote on their favorite project. We are hoping to have an educational event for the public this year. Mike stated that at the present time, per U of A COVID-19 rules, we can have an event with 50 people or less, providing masks are worn and social distancing is heeded. There will be a plant sale at the Ozark Humane Society thrift shop on May 1. Members are invited to come, bring plants to sell and work with the public on identifying and growing them. Darlene Cullen is putting this together and will be selling day-lilies at the event. Beverly Hefley won the door prize, a pre-potted Basil plant. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:05 p.m.
