Boone County Master Gardners meeting notes

Posted

The May meeting of the Boone County Master Gardeners was held at the Fellowship Bible Church in their large meeting room to abide by the restrictions for COVID-19. Hand sanitizers were on every table and members wore masks. President Olena opened the meeting at 6:05 p.m. with 14 members, 1 trainee and Mike McClintock present.

Our program was presented by Linda Glass of the Friends of The Prairie organization. She told how she inherited the love of nature and wildflowers from her mother who taught her about many of them. After retiring from teaching, she decided to take her interest more seriously and became deeply involved in educating the public about the Baker Prairie here in Harrison. The prairie is considered a real treasure and is a designated protected natural area by the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission, one of 74 such protected areas in the state. It has 21 species of plants and animals of concern that are “tracked” species by the Commission.

The hanging baskets were hung on May 5 with huge help from the NAC boys’ basketball players who were thanked and rewarded with cookies. We are also incredibly grateful to Camps Plants for helping us with the plants. Carol Freeman and Lavonne McCullough planted the baskets by themselves, rather than making it a group effort due to the COVID-19 restrictions year and they received a hand of applause for their efforts.

President Olena then opened discussion about the June 19 Tour of the Gardens. In addition to the public tour, we are planning to have a plant sale. Olena asked the Chairmen of the beds to divide plants from their specific beds to sell, so people can see what a mature plant will look like in the future. She asked that we identify the plants so she can make markers for them, as well as instructions for their growth. On that day, the public will also vote for their favorite bed. A box for cash donations will be available, so the public can “Have a Share in The Square”.

Our July meeting will be a picnic on July 10 at 12 p.m. for members and their families, under the large pavilion at the Fellowship Bible Church. The Board will provide the meats, buns, condiments and drinking water, members are asked to bring side dishes and desserts.

The May work day will be Saturday, the 8, with work toward getting the beds in tip-top shape for June 19.

Drawings for door prizes were held with Christine Parks receiving a beautiful Begonia, and the second Begonia was won by our stellar prize winner Beverly Hefley!
