Creatures featured at Boone County Library

Posted

The Boone County Library has hosted several interesting guests this month! Educational programs had an animal theme during the last few weeks and creatures were featured as well as people who write books about them.

Patrons of the library were a little surprised to see a live baby alligator in the building Wednesday, July 7, around 1 p.m. The gator was brought by the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission as part of the Alligator Program and was only visiting the area. Thursday, July 8, Marina Perez with Buffalo National River came in to talk about otters and do crafts with the children.

The following week included a visit from Joy Metzer, author of “Happy Tails: Jitterbug Makes a Name for Herself.” Metzer’s book follows a dachshund puppy named Jitterbug as she decides to trade the quiet life in the Ozarks for the big city and a career in show business. Jitterbug finds success and lands parts in commercials and TV shows. The pup finds that fame is a lot of work and very little play. She also realizes how much she misses her friends and family back home. Jitterbug must decide between her career and her friends in the country.

Keeping the Tales and Tails theme, Miss Jamie from the Dickerson Park Zoo came to visit the library on Tuesday, July 20. She brought some interesting guests along! The presentation was focused on the concept of ecosystems and the importance of each and every plant and animal within them. First up was Martha the morning dove. Martha had been making soft cooing sounds in her covered cage. Martha is a herbivore, eating only plants and seeds. Her job is to disperse seeds so that more plants can grow. Next, the kids met Gryffindor the hedgehog. Hedgehogs are omnivores that eat both plants and other animals. The omnivore family includes humans, chickens and bears. Gryffindor rested in Miss Jamie’s hand and curled up into a spiky little ball when the children got excited.

Miss Jamie’s last guest was Jumanji, a male python. Jumanji poked his head out of Miss Jamie’s hands and saw a room full of children who were squealing with excitement. The snake was there to represent the carnivore group. Carnivores only eat meat and other animal foods such as eggs.

The library has many educational programs for children of all ages. For more information, visit boonecountylibrary.org
