The meeting included planning for the upcoming year and kicking-off the state-wide Service to Veterans projects. Arkansas Regent Gretchen Magee and Mrs. VanBuren dedicated the America 250! Plaque on Friday, Aug. 13. The plaque is placed in the DAR Room at the Old State House. A reception hosted by the Wataseka District followed. The DAR goal is to have one America 250! Plaque dedicated in each state by 2026 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of our United States. The Friday evening meeting began with the Posting of the Colors by Harrison Boy Scout Troop 60, who stepped in to assist due to a last-minute cancellation. President General VanBuren was the Friday night speaker. Saturday’s meeting included reports and explanation of Our First Veterans Project. Each chapter is preparing slides with the names and some proven information of member’s Patriots. When the project is finished, the slides will be uploaded to the ASDAR website for viewing. The chapters will again participate in the Christmas Shoeboxes for Veterans. Shoeboxes are packed with items for men and women Veterans and distributed through the VA facilities in Fayetteville and Little Rock. Last year, 25 Arkansas DAR chapters distributed 854 boxes valued at $17,080 to Veterans in medical facilities, homeless or in need. Our project this year is Wreaths Across America. Chapters will be enrolling cemeteries within the state to serve as host cemeteries with Chapters enrolling as sponsoring agencies. Individuals and organizations will be given the opportunity to sponsor wreaths at a national cemetery of their choice or local cemetery that is a registered sponsor of Wreaths Across America. The WAA Mobile Education Exhibit will be visiting Arkansas in April of 2022 with Harrison suggested as one of the locations for the exhibit. Arrangements will be made for schools to bring their students to visit the exhibit and learn more about the Veterans who served our country. For further information about these veteran projects, please contact Sandra Hillier, DAR VAVS Representative and DAR Service to Veterans Committee Co-chair Northwest at sph7084@cox.net with “Veterans” in the subject line. The public is invited to participate. The meeting concluded with the distribution of certificates. Harrison Colony Chapter received 11 certificates from the District and National Chairmen.
