Lead ore was discovered by early settlers and explorers. It was first used for bullets. In the 1850’s some small mining operations were begun near Dubuque, in northern Carroll and Marion Counties; (this was prior to the formation of Boone County). The state geologist report for the period 1850-58 says, “The diggings have been somewhat deeper in Carroll than in Marion County, but still quite limited, consisting of a few shallow trenches on the hillside and one shaft of 40 feet.”
