Newton County resident Haywood Brown would give Jethro Bodine a run for his money in a shootin’ match. Brown, 62, of near Hasty, turned a paper-serving visit to Brown’s cabin by Newton County Sheriff Russell Burdine into a siege and shootout that would put any Western movie to shame. When the smoke cleared, (literally, because apparently Brown ran out of ammunition and set fire to the cabin), lawmen found Brown and his dogs dead in the basement and Brown’s invalid sister, Dora, dead and consumed by the fire in her bed. Three lawmen were shot as well, suffering various types of injuries.
