Posted
During the Harrison School District Board of Education meeting Tuesday, Aug. 17, Dr. Stewart Pratt congratulated staff member Stephanie Barr for her work with students and asked former superintendent Dr. Charles Adair to make the presentation. Barr was named the 2021 recipient of the Parsons-Burnett Scholarship Grant. The scholarships are awarded each year by the Arkansas Teachers Association. Their purpose is to support the further education of practicing Arkansas public school educators. Barr is a graduate of the University of the Ozarks and currently a teacher in the Harrison School District. She plans to use the funds to pursue an advanced degree in curriculum and instruction for special education. Adair and James Morris presented a $2,000 check to Barr at the School Board Meeting Tuesday, Aug. 17. “It’s a pleasure to be here,” Adair said. “I happen to be the president of the Boone, Newton County Teachers and Support Staff Association. So I have the pleasure to present this check to Mrs. Barr. The teachers association gathers these funds through donations from the members — usually in honor of someone who has passed away. We want to help her with her graduate work. Only twelve people in the state were selected to receive this scholarship, so we are very proud of her.” Pratt asked Barr’s supervisor, Brigid Bright to explain the duties of Mrs. Barr. “Stephanie Barr is a special education teacher in the district and services the self contained students in high school. She is a rock star go getter. She provides educational instruction to students 9-12 in a self contained environment. On top of that she has spearheaded the WOW (World of Work) program. She’s made real life experiences for students with disabilities. She’s connected them with their interests. Some work with Cause for Paws or Hobby Lobby as a clerk. They can actually get paid for their work experiences. Six Sisters and Luxe on Rush have products for sale the students have made,” Bright said. “With COVID last year, she wasn’t gonna let that rock her world. Last year when they couldn’t access the community as well, she found jobs on site in the district. There is not another teacher that is more deserving. She works so hard for our most special Goblins. I’m very proud of her and we are blessed to have her,” Bright added. School Board member John McCuistion said, “Mrs. Barr does tremendous things for our district. I’m blessed to have a son that was in her care and still needs her care. She will drop what she’s doing if any student needs her — even if it’s on her own time. She loves kids, and we love you.”
