We need wisdom

Posted

We have flipped another page of the calendar. Wow how time flies. My Bible reading today is about the time period of King Solomon dedicating the temple he built for God. It took seven years to build. I get antsy when we have great building projects happening here in town that take a year! I can’t imagine waiting seven!

But that temple was magnificent. It’s very interesting to see Soloman’s involvement in the planning and organizing stages of the process. Of course he is known as the wisest man who ever lived.

Don’t you like to be around wise people? I sure do. And when I read about Soloman’s wisdom, I realize that the same wisdom (Maybe not with the over abundance of wisdom like him) is available to me!  God has promised wisdom if we ask for it, he will give it to us.

Wow! What if every believer asked for wisdom every day? Don’t you think that would change the direction of our businesses, our relationships and our nation?

Why don’t we?  Well, maybe we don’t really believe God will give us wisdom. Just like I included the phrase … probably not as much as Soloman’s had … well why not? I guess the answer is that I don’t deserve it, and why would God give me that much wisdom when there is less time ahead of me than what I’ve already lived?

Let’s get off of that merry-go-round. I’m alive at this moment and breathing because God isn’t finished with me. That could all change before the day is over. You are in the same boat.

We still have a job to do for the Lord if we are believers and still breathing. I have several friends and family members who just can’t get out and “do” what they used to do for the Lord. That’s OK. He knows! But there are still things you can do from that easy chair! PRAY!!! PRAY!!! PRAY!!!

I’ve challenged myself to start praying for more wisdom. I’m not expecting to suddenly have the knowledge of an architect to remodel the downtown into liveable cute lofts spaces. (Wouldn’t that be fun to have that kind of ability and money?)

But I can ask for wisdom in dealing with people and making sure they know how special they are to my life and to God. I get so mad at myself when the flesh jumps in and I say or type something snarky to someone. I should have just taken the time to delete that crazy comment and then I wouldn’t feel guilty for saying it!

Wisdom is a tremendous gift. I don’t know the history of every modern invention, but I truly feel like God provided some wisdom and creativity in a lot of people’s little brains to come up with some incredible ideas that we use every day!

When you read how Solomon constructed the Temple without the modern tools and computers we have today — they were very smart and resourceful. That’s what I want to be when I grow up. Smart and resourceful!

Proverbs 4:6-7 reads, “Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. Wisdom is supreme.

Proverbs 2:6, “For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth comes knowledge and understanding.”

Ephesians 5:15-16, “See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.”

James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.:

Did you catch that? God will give us wisdom if we ask … without finding fault in us.

That’s an amazing promise! And remember God Can Not Lie!!!

There are so many great verses in the Bible about wisdom. Just Google it and you will be amazed. Here’s one I hadn’t thought about. If you’re stuck in the ‘good ole days’ this is for you. “Do not say, ‘Why were the old days better than these?’ For it is not wise to ask such questions.” Ecclesiastes 7:10.

So let’s press on.

“Where there is strife, there is pride, but wisdom is found in those who take advice.” Proverbs. 13:10.

If you aren’t a regular Bible reader, start with Proverbs and read a Chapter a day, or the book of John in the New Testament or James … the New Testament version of Proverbs. You will gain understanding and wisdom. Let’s change our world (even if it’s only the people around us.) We can make a difference by asking God for wisdom. He’s promised to give it!
