Tax time comes once again

Published 4:00 am Thursday, October 1, 2026

Ready or not, here it comes. The deadline to pay one’s property taxes is fast approaching.

The Actual deadline to pay will be Thursday, Oct. 15. Payments have been accepted since March 1, but the book will close on Oct. 15. All taxes unpaid after that will be considered “delinquent” and a 10% penalty will be placed on the taxes, along with an annual 10% interest charge.

In The Natural State, taxes fund many things, including education, roads, hospitals, libraries, and public safety, as well as general operations of county and city governments.

Property that gets taxed is broken down into two categories. The first is “real property”; this is tangible, owned property and real estate that does not move. Barns, buildings, and homes are all included under this umbrella. The second category is “personal property.” These are the tangible items, both inanimate and animate. These include livestock, cars, boats, motorcycles, and RVs.

The taxes you pay are determined by local property values and millage rates. From Jan. 1 to May 31 each year, Arkansans are required to report their personal property to the county assessor. That assessment is used to levy taxes based on mills. A mill equals one-thousandth of a dollar. Ten mills equal one cent. A ten mill tax means paying $10 per $1,000 of assessed value. The assessed value of the property is determined to be 20% of its market value.
