Week of October 5

Published 4:00 am Sunday, October 11, 2026

We want to recognize our Dyslexia Interventionists this week. October is Dyslexia Awareness Month, and we have excellent interventionists on each campus who are highly trained in the assessment, identification, and intervention of students who exhibit characteristics of dyslexia. Our interventionists are: Amanda Atkinson (Kindergarten), Missy Taylor, CALT (Forest Heights), Kristen Styles (Skyline Heights), Jody Morris (HMS 5/6), Megan Walker (HMS 7/8), and Megan Gibson (Harrison High School).

Our district appreciates the hard work these staff members do to ensure success for all our students. Preschool students have been learning all about community helpers and the jobs they do. Visits to the Preschool have come from firemen, UPS carriers, and bankers. Students are learning about the many jobs our community offers. They are also working on recognizing their names in print, and have been practicing writing their names. During literacy time, students have been working on rhyming words, beginning sounds, and compound words. Our youngest learners are hard at work, as usual.

Our little Gobs at the Harrison Kindergarten are learning through real-life scenarios in Mrs. Waller’s library. They are building communication, problem-solving, using teamwork and creativity, and gaining confidence along the way. When children get the chance to pretend, explore, and practice real world experiences, they are doing so much more than playing. They are learning skills that will last a lifetime. Forest Heights Elementary has been recognized by the Office of Education Policy at the University of Arkansas as the #1 School in the Northwest Region for High ELA (English/Language Arts) Growth and the #7 School in the entire state of Arkansas for High ELA growth. The third graders at Forest Heights have been busy reading in September. They read a total of 31,236 minutes!

Mrs. Cross’s third graders at Skyline Heights dove into a Mystery Science lesson all about pollination. Students explored how pollen moves from flower to flower and the important role pollinators play in helping plants reproduce. Science is buzzing in third grade.

Mrs. Benton’s ELA class at the Harrison Middle School took their writing outside this week. Students connected with nature, gathered ideas, and planned their stories for the “My Natural State Story” essay contest. Sometimes the best inspiration is just outside the classroom. This was the perfect assignment for getting outdoors.

Zachary Linn, Bailey Mann, and Riley Crow from GobTV finished filming a reality tv show featuring Paula Deen. Over the course of the past two weeks, they filmed the segment and wrapped up in Branson at Paula Deen’s restaurant with her. Cole Murry and Stevie Jones helped film the first segments of the show. They had an amazing time working on this project. Harrison High School students enjoyed Homecoming Week last week with all the festivities that are involved.

Parent-Teacher Conferences are Wednesday, October 14. School will dismiss at 1 p.m. and conferences begin at 2 p.m. On Thursday, October 15, teachers will attend Professional Development across the District, and there will be no school for students that day. Students and staff will enjoy Fall Break on Friday, October 16.
