The Harrison Public Schools Foundation will be holding the annual Distinguished Alumni Award Banquet on October 27, at the Signature Tower. Honorees include the Cavender Family (Goblin Alumni), Mr. Jeff Christenson (Distinguished Educator), and Danny and Tammie Roth (Foundation Legacy Award). Tickets are $40 each, and can be purchased by contacting Linda Wells, at the Harrison School District Administration Building.
Preschool students who have shown kindness, respect, and positive behavior get to enjoy “Slop with a Cop”. The first Slop with a Cop event happened this week at the Preschool. Winners were able to enjoy lunch with Officer Grisham. The Preschool is looking forward to Trunk or Treat on October 30.
Kindergarten is looking forward to Homecoming Spirit Week next week. Students will dress for the occasion with a new theme every day. School spirit begins with our youngest learners, and continues on through high school and beyond.
Forest Heights second graders enjoyed getting outside to read. What a great way to enjoy the love of nature and the love of reading at the same time! Third grade students have been practicing equal groups in math class. Students were able to make their own groups, decide how many objects to put in each group, and the write the multiplication equation to match. Several classes at Forest Heights enjoyed Johnny Appleseed Day by reading stories, doing apple-themed crafts, solving math problems, and completing writing activities, and taste testing different types of apples. We love Johnny Appleseed!
Mrs. Strough’s first graders at Skyline Heights enjoyed Mystery Reader Friday with Mr. Sciarra. He surprised the first graders with Curious George and the Firefighters, and they were very excited! We appreciate parents taking such an interest and being involved in our classrooms across the district. Mrs. Evert’s fourth grade art classes are celebrating America through art. As part of the America 250 unit, students learned how to use lines intentionally to create the optical illusion of waving fabric on the American flag. They also practiced using hatching lines to create shading and dimension in the folds of their flags.
The Harrison Middle School Student Council had an incredible day of learning and leadership in our community. Students met with the mayor for a question-and-answer session about overcoming adversity, community growth, and how city government works. They also had the opportunity to tour the police department and fire station, learning more about the people who serve and protect our community every day. What a great experience for our students to see leadership and public service in action! Goblins are growing into great community leaders!
Mr. Rook’s Biology classes at Harrison High School tried to the answer the question, “Are double-stuffed Oreos really double-stuffed?” Students used scientific measurements and math to answer the question. Ms. Dove’s math classes practiced ration conversions with Tarsia Puzzles as an interactive way to review their lessons. The theatre students in Ms. Dixon’s classes enjoyed a workshop with TheatreSquared. They brought their tour of “All Greek to Me” to Harrison High School and all the Theatre 1-4 students (roughly 109 kids) attended the performance and had a talkback with the actors about the play, life as an actor, where they attended school, etc. The Theatre 2-4 students had the opportunity for a workshop with the actors. It was a great learning experience for everyone.
So many fun and worthwhile learning experiences happen every day across the Harrison School District. We hope you are enjoying reading about all the great things our students and staff are doing. We are learning. We are Harrison!
