Search warrant executed in St. Joe murder case

FORSYTH, Mo. — A search warrant to obtain biological DNA evidence from Jeffrey Stansbery was executed on Sept. 21 by officers from the Arkansas State Police (ASP) and Searcy County Sheriff’s Office. The officers obtained cheek swabs and photographed Stansbery’s hands. Stansbery is being held in the Taney County Detention Center in Forsyth, Missouri, and the officers performed the search there.

YELLVILLE — Marion County Sheriff Gregg Alexander reported this week that Marion County Detention Center (MCDC) Jail Administrator Cassie Foster recently completed Jail Administrators certification training in Benton.

FEMA denies federal coverage request, Sanders appeals

LITTLE ROCK — Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders is appealing the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) decision on Sept. 20, which denied Arkansas 100% federal cost share adjustment of recovery efforts. The governor made the FEMA request in response to the Memorial Day weekend storms in Northwest and Central Arkansas.

New billing system coming for city water customers

The City of Harrison has announced that because it is converting to a new billing system, the city's water department will not be able to accept cash or checks for the rest of this week.

Retired Teachers Association meeting held

The Boone/Newton County Retired Teachers and Support Staff Association met Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2024, at Western Sizzlin' in Harrison. The meeting was called to order by President Lisa Bailey. Amy Young led the Invocation, and Linda Mathis led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Jasper school board convenes at Kingston

KINGSTON — The Jasper School District Board of Education held its regular monthly meeting Monday night, Sept. 16, at the Kingston School campus. Traditionally, the board conducts business at the start of the school year by visiting the remote campuses. The board will hold its next regular meeting at the Oark School campus on Oct. 21. Regular monthly meetings are conducted on the third Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m., usually in the Jasper School Library.

The First Annual Heart of the Ozarks Corvette Show takes place in Harrison this weekend. The Heart of Oklahoma Corvette Club (HOCC) has been working with Harrison officials and business representatives to put the event together — a collaboration that started in 2020.

LITTLE ROCK — On Friday, Sept. 20, the Arkansas Division of Workforce Services, Workforce Policy and Innovation, in conjunction with the Bureau of Labor Statistics, announced Arkansas’ seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained at 3.3% for a third consecutive month. The United States’ jobless rate declined one-tenth of a percent point, from 4.3% in July to 4.2% in August.
HARRISBURG — Increasing funding for land-grant work in Arkansas agriculture may take some persuasion, considering how few legislators have ties to agriculture or understand the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture’s impact in every Arkansas county.
BENTONVILLE — This month, Walmart introduced Caroline’s Carts into all its Arkansas stores. The specially designed carts help caregivers of children and adults with disabilities navigate all Walmart stores in Arkansas more easily. The retailer says that this multimillion-dollar investment is part of a larger commitment to champion inclusivity and accessibility in all its stores.

Boone County Cattlemen’s Association September meeting

The Boone County Cattlemen’s Association met on Thursday, September 5, 2024.  This meeting was sponsored by CS Bank in Harrison.  BCCA President John Muncy opened the meeting and led the Pledge of Allegiance.  Gerald King offered a blessing.  We were served a meal of brisket, roasted potatoes, baked beans, potato salad, cole slaw, cornbread, bread, tea, and water.

Cadyn Deakins, a member of the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) at Harrison Middle School, represented her school at the FCCLA National Conference held in Seattle, Wash., in late June 2024. Competing against students from schools across the nation in the Food Innovations category, Cadyn demonstrated skill and creativity, earning a gold medal and placing in the top ten nationally.
The Harrison Round-Up club will host the IPRA Rodeo this week at their arena located at the Northwest Arkansas District Fairgrounds in Harrison. The popular event is fun for the whole family, with concessions served to satisfy hungry cowboys and cowgirls of all ages.
This past weekend saw summer end and autumn begin as the autumnal equinox arrived on Sunday. Daylight hours will shorten now as candy corn and pumpkin-spice-everything populates the grocery store shelves. The Northwest Arkansas District Fair brought families out in Harrison last weekend and the upcoming fall months have more local fun in store.
At their noon meeting on September 16, the Harrison Kiwanis Club made a large donation of diapers to the local Circle of Life Program. “This donation to the Circle of Life Program ties back to the Kiwanis Motto, “Serving the Children of the World,” said Kiwanis President-Elect Kyle Evatt.

The Harrison School Board held its monthly meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 17, approving the budgets for the 2024-25 school year.

Department of Education releases details for FAFSA testing

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Wednesday, Sept. 11, The U.S. Department of Education announced additional details of the subsequent beta testing period ahead of making the 2025–26 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) available to all students and contributors on or before Dec. 1. Starting on Sept. 11, high schools, community-based organizations (CBOs), institutions of higher education and state entities can submit the interest form to participate in subsequent stages of the testing period, including Beta 2 (launching in mid-October), Beta 3 (early November), and Beta 4 (mid-November).
