Alfred Blackmon, age 88, of Harrison, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 22 (2019) at Hillcrest Home.

He was born Aug. 30, 1930, in Alpena, the son of Wayne and Dell (Davis) Blackmon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Floretta (Bailey) Blackmon; and son, Gary Blackmon.

Alfred met the love of his life, Floretta, in California in 1952. They were married one month later, a marriage lasting over 63 years.  After 15 years, they returned to Arkansas where they were both born.  Here they raised their three children, Gary, Sandy and Brenda. Church was always a huge part of his life. For six years, Al and Flo sang with Mary Ramsey-Borman and Nita Keener, The Gospel Sounds. He was a member of Harrison Faith.

Al worked for AP&L (Entergy) for over 20 years and before that in California for Pacific Gas and Electric. He started as a lineman and finished his career as a serviceman. He loved to tell stories of the old days of working with his buddies and all the jokes they would play on each other. While Al had no siblings, his in-laws, Doyle, Kenneth, Larry, Ronnie and Connie, were like his own. Fishing, hunting, farming, and exploring the Ozarks and of course teasing and joking around were a big part of the early years. Al never met a stranger. He could talk, what seemed like hours to his children, to someone just passing by on the old dirt roads of Alpena.

Al was a compassionate and loving family man. He was never afraid to say, “I love you,” to his family and friends. His loving kindness was known by many, particularly his family.

After retirement, Al and Flo loved to travel. They enjoyed spending their time traveling in their travel trailer across the country.  Their favorite thing was attending Southern Gospel Singings. He also did woodworking in his spare time making beautiful furniture.

Al is survived by two daughters, Sandy (Beth Fitzgerald) Blackmon and Brenda (Jackie) Mathis; one daughter-in-law, Kathy Mattox Blackmon; two grandsons, Brad (Ida Bostian) Blackmon and Ryan (Christy Stone) Blackmon; and two great-granddaughters, Kaitlin and Alyssa.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 24, at Roller-Christeson Funeral Home.
