Many families have likely been touched by addiction, whether through a loved one or a friend. In Harrison, we're fortunate to have four recovery organizations operating with residential homes in our neighborhoods.

I’ve had the opportunity to interact with individuals battling their addictions, and I'm grateful for these programs because they offer a pathway to a new, positive life. The individuals managing these homes, all former addicts themselves, are true heroes with years of sobriety under their belts.

Finding suitable homes in welcoming neighborhoods hasn't always been easy, but recent strategies have proven effective. For instance, the most recent home was established in a lower-income area, where a rundown property was renovated and revitalized. The community embraced the initiative, and it seamlessly integrated into the neighborhood.

Unfortunately, there have been challenges, such as opposition from neighbors before understanding the benefits of such homes. However, these experiences have taught me valuable lessons. Approximately 40 individuals, both men and women, are enrolled in recovery programs, a significant increase from just two years ago.

This transformation means several positive outcomes for Harrison. First, many individuals have the opportunity to turn their lives around for the better. Second, by providing support and housing, we may see a decrease in homelessness and panhandling, indicating a positive shift in our community.

It's crucial to ensure these homes remain an integral part of our community and continue to transform lives. While it's admirable to support those beyond Harrison, prioritizing assistance for our own community members is essential for long-term impact and sustainability.
