Those involved in train operations must have an approved railroad watch that has been compared with Standard Time prior to the run. Standard Time clocks are located Joplin, Neosho and Harrison for the First District. You would typically compare times with your engineer prior to departure from Harrison so that you are both confident that you have the correct time. In the 1930’s there were no wrist watches considered capable of maintaining correct time, so approved pocket watches were required, and those had to be inspected by an approved company jeweler from time to time. It was every railroader’s prized possession and was sometimes a family heirloom passed from one generation of railroaders to the next.
