Searcy County Historical Society meeting Jan. 27

Posted

Dr. Kenneth Barnes, history professor at UCA, will give the program at the January Searcy County Historical Society meeting on Friday, Jan. 27, at Marshall’s First Christian Church. His topic will be about Searcy County’s involvement on both sides of the 1922-1923 M&N A Railroad strike. Dr. Barnes has also authored a book about the Ku Klux Klan in Arkansas that was active at the same time as the strike. There was interaction between the two and Searcy County was involved. Dr. Barnes will have copies of his Ku Klux Klan book at the meeting if
anyone would like to purchase a signed copy.
Also, look for a big article in Monday's (Jan 23) Arkansas Democrat-Gazette about the MNA strike and riot that ended it. Dr Barnes had talked with Celia Story, who writes the Monday feature on "100 years ago" thinking she might want to do something about the strike, given that it was all over the papers 100 years ago this week. She asked Barnes to write a feature article about it. They used some cool photos
and headlines. The timing is perfect to get some interest for the talk on Friday. The Searcy County Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. in the First Christian Church for Dr. Barnes’ presentation. Coffee and nibbles
will be available.
