The Arkansas LEARNS Act of 2023 reorganized and restructured protocols, placing early childhood programs (including preschools) under the authority of the state Department of Education.

DEER — The Deer/Mt. Judea School District Board of Education met in regular session Monday night, Dec. 9, and among the business conducted was the presentation and passage of the Arkansas School Choice Capacity Resolution 4.5F. This resolution establishes capacity standards for school choice applicants. The resolution is based on the provisions of policy 4.5—School Choice and applicable Arkansas law.

LITTLE ROCK — The Arkansas Department of Education has announced the launch of the $5 million Transportation Modernization Grant Program. Created through the governor’s LEARNS Act, the program focuses on “innovative approaches” to transportation for students who attend public schools, open enrollment charter schools, and licensed child care centers serving publicly-funded students.

FAYETTEVILLE — In 2021, the UA School of Social Work partnered with the Fayetteville Police Department to pair officers with social workers trained to help people suffering mental crises. Initially, the officers were supportive of the effort but also somewhat hesitant. Now that the co-response teams are fully established, the officers say the program benefits the community and helps them carry out their duties.
