I was saddened to hear that Mary Evelyn Middleton passed away one day this week. A year or so ago, Lee Hankins and I went over to the Log Hall area where Mary lived and visited with her. She had a lot of ancestor information she had gleaned from various documents. From her documentation we learned that our group of Smith’s were closely related to Mary’s Flud ancestors. Last week-end Carl and I were working in the woods and I got a whole load of ticks on me. The best thing I have found to ease the itch after pulling a tick off is calamine lotion. But even with that I have a tendency to want to scratch! Carl doesn’t seem to get as many bites. He thinks that is because he takes a garlic tablet every day.

Greetings from Capps. A few cool days at the start of the week were a real blessing, especially when there is so much heat and severe weather in most of the rest of the country. I'm still inclined to believe that God has his hand on this area, now we all just need to agree that He will open it up and give us some showers of rain. Be aware of both utility workers and tree trimmers in the Capps area for the next few weeks and slow down on Highway 392. They came up my driveway this morning. The State Patrol is ramping up speed enforcement in late July also so just as well. Our two Mini-Herefords went back to Huntsville to get rebred, hopefully they'll get it this time. One miscarried over the winter. We have a goat due to kid at the end of the month as well. The Homesteaders Swap Meet will be held today (Saturday) from 9 a.m. to noon at the Capps Mini Storage at 4347 Old Capps Road, then the first and third Saturdays of August. The Capps Batavia Fire Department held our monthly board meeting last Monday night to discuss our budget for the coming year. Upgrading equipment, training new recruits and potential facility improvements were discussed. Please pray for one of our men who suffered a detached retina during a violent sneezing bout who needs healing and vision restored. Until next week, blessings, Doug

Fanfare often surrounds national signing day for high-school seniors accepting college scholarships to play basketball, football, baseball and softball, but many other high-school athletes will go to college next fall thanks to other sports. In the case of Bergman senior Tripp Siemiller, it was bending a bow and launching an arrow with pinpoint precision that led to his offer from the University of Pikeville in Kentucky to shoot at the collegiate level.
